Mason City Schools Boosters implore citizens to vote “yes” on levies

Email sent to parents of Mason City School District students:

Hello Mohawk Boosters,

Next Tuesday, is a very important day for Mason City Community Schools. It is the day of the ISL/PPEL Levy vote. Please don’t forget to vote yes, and remind all of your friends and family to get out and vote yes. Our yes votes truly count and we need each and every one of them. The last time we had this vote was 2009, and it was defeated by a 2-1 margin. We had a lot of parents and even school employees that just thought it would pass and didn’t exercise the right to vote yes! The ISL levy will put back about 1.8 million into our general fund budget and that budget is what funds support services for students. It will also provide necessary general fund dollars to improve existing educational programs. You will remember this past spring, there were 14 assistant coaches whose jobs were potentially going to be cut, those salaries come from the general funds. We have also been told if the PPEL passes, there is a good chance an auxiliary gym could be constructed!

We are one of 12 schools left in the state that does not have a support levy in place for our schools. We are the biggest of those 12 schools districts out of 362 school districts in the state of Iowa! All of the CIML schools have support levies, Fort Dodge and Marshalltown being two of them! Please take the time to vote. You can vote any time between now and Tuesday at the court house.

Regardless of where you live in the Mason City School District, you may vote at ANY of the following voting centers on September 10th:

*Harding Elementary (1239 N Rhode Island)
*First Presbyterian Church (100 S Pierce)
*Wesley United Methodist Church (1405 S Penn)
*Rolling Acres CR Church (340 19th SW)
*Cerro Gordo County Courthouse (220 N Washington)

Thanks,
Jon Danielson

Kind of caught my attention with mention of an auxiliary gym. I don’t like that at all

Have you seen what the other CIML schools have in regard to gym space? Gym space is used for more than bouncing basketballs.

I will be voting no on this issue. I think the taxpayers have been more then generous when we look at all the new schools and make overs we have approved. Time for the school district to tighten its belt. Lets start with administration staff first then work our way down.

It is a good thing they put the voting locations on N.I.T. The Glob had them in extremely small print in the classified section of the paper on the top of the sample ballot. It almost takes a magnifying glass to read them. And why is there not a voting place in the N.W. quadrant of town. It seems like they are making it as hard as possible for a lot of seniors to vote. Maybe that is their plan.

LVS-I think you are correct. They do not want to make it easy for the no voters to get out and vote. I have already voted at the court house, it is a easy & convenient way to cast your vote.

@MC83-it is if you are not handicapped like many seniors are.

I don’t think the upcoming vote is a secret to anyone that lives in Mason City unless you live under a rock.
