Harkin Announces More than $1.1 Million for Iowa Airports

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that three Iowa airports will receive a total of $1,105,823 from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for various rehabilitation and improvement projects. Included among the projects is a groundbreaking study for a new regional airport in Pella. Harkin is a senior member of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds these initiatives.

“Iowa’s airports are crucial to our communities and an important aspect of our economic health. Ensuring our airports can withstand the wear and tear of time is a vital role to the safety of travelers throughout our state,” said Harkin. “Today’s funding starts the process of bringing a regional airport to Pella, which will increase economic opportunities and create jobs in the area. I congratulate these airports on this funding and I look forward to the improvements it will generate.”

Details of the funding below:

Jefferson Municipal Airport – $175,374 to fund the land acquisition phase to extend Runway 14/32 to enable the airport to meet runway safety area and runway protection zone standards.
Pella Regional Airport – $460,612 to provide for the site selection, master planning, and environmental assessment for the proposed regional airport.
Sheldon Municipal Airport – $469,837 to rehabilitate the existing pavement.
