Thousand Gallons of Sugar Water Released to Mississippi River at Keokuk

KEOKUK – A 1,000-gallon spill of sugar water was released to the Mississippi River Aug. 1 due to an overflow of a sugar water tank at the Roquette America refinery, 1003 S Fifth Street, Keokuk.

The spill occurred at 11 p.m. when operator error caused the overflow. The facility shut down the process at approximately 11:07 p.m. to stop the release.

The spill was reported to the Iowa DNR at 6 a.m. August 2.
