Iowa DOT’s online driver’s license renewal hits the Iowa State Fair

iowadotlogoANKENY – Iowans may be used to spending a day at the Iowa State Fair sampling delicious food on a stick, listening to their favorite bands or winning ribbons, but this year fairgoers can renew their driver’s license or nonoperator identification (ID) cards too.

Fairgoers visiting the Iowa Department of Transportation booth in the Varied Industries Building will have another option to renew their driver’s license or ID where it is convenient for them by using self-serve kiosks in the booth.

The self-serve kiosks offer Web-based service that extends the online renewal service available Customers using self-service kiosks not only can renew their Iowa driver’s license or ID card electronically, but can also securely update the photo that will appear on their new driver’s license or ID card.

”Electronic renewal, whether online or through kiosks, offers eligible Iowans a convenient way to renew their card without interrupting their day and driving to an issuance site,” Mark Lowe, director of the Iowa DOT’s Motor Vehicle Division, said. “Over time electronic renewal will also help reduce congestion at driver’s license issuance locations and will save time for customers who need in-person service. During 2014, we hope to place self-serve kiosks in other locations convenient for customers.”

Lowe added, “We’re very pleased with the early success of online renewal. Since we launched it in mid-July, 6,169 customers have completed an online renewal transaction. At that pace, we anticipate online renewal will save Iowans more than $2.4 million in time and travel over the course of one year. As a point of reference, the number of transactions completed online since mid-July exceeds the total number of transactions completed at 73 of Iowa’s driver’s license issuance locations in FY 2013. On a daily basis, online renewal creates a virtual driver’s license issuance site that handles about the same number of transactions as our largest issuance locations, with the benefit of being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

There are stipulations on who can renew a driver’s license or ID card online because of public safety and identity security concerns. With some exceptions, you can renew online if:

  • You have a valid Iowa driver’s license or ID (not a commercial driver’s license).
  • You are at least 18, but younger than 70 years old.
  • Your license or ID card has not been expired for more than a year.
  • It is less than 180 days to the renewal date on your current driver’s license or ID card.
  • You are a U.S. citizen.
  • You do not have any medical or vision conditions that would impact your ability to drive.
  • You do not need to change the address or name printed on your card.

Individuals should watch for imposter websites trying to take advantage of people. Remember, the only place you can renew online is through the Iowa DOT’s official website at Websites that have a website address ending in .com or .org, including, are not affiliated with the Iowa DOT and cannot renew your Iowa driver’s license or ID card.
