Heidi Marquardt’s recent letter to the editor published in the Globe Gazette was intentional with forethought and malice aimed directly at her brother-in-law, NIT publisher Matt Marquardt.
What Mrs. Marquardt left out was the mayor’s frequent public drunkenness throughout this city. The arrogant behavior he displayed in our stores and shops. His reckless approach to allowing a dangerous trash burning plant to locate here without due diligence thereby putting the community at risk. The list is long.
Bookmeyer pulled the rug out from under the downtrodden whom turned to the Human Rights agency as a means of protection against exploitation. He was not responsible for the Park Inn project or the street beautification. Mrs. Marquardt would have to look long and hard to find one thing that could be considered positive that has Bookmeyer’s name attached to it.
She should know better, having been in Bookmeyer’s camp for years and being an integral part of his first campaign in 2009.
What this has turned into is all of Bookmeyer’s original cronies are protecting him now in order to protect themselves. How could some one like Heidi Marquardt do any differently? Not supporting Bookmeyer now would be seen in the community as an acknowledgment by her of all of the misdeeds and bad behavior Bookmeyer has suffered upon his citizens. She thinks publicly supporting him washes it all away and restores his reputation. I suppose in her own mind, it does. The people of Mason City know differently, and now she is forever tied to this buffoon.
It will be a bumpy ride.

Pete, The article by Heidi Marqurdt if you read it was not aimed at her brother in law. Her article was in support of the mayor. I knew you couldn’t write but now I wonder if you can read. The sad part is your hatred for Bookmeyer has lead you blindly. Unfortunately with all your attempts and meetings to find candidates to run come November. My projection is that all four candidates up for re-election will win. First of all because most people won’t take a candidate serious that you and nit support and a person with any moral compass won’t want your endorsement. So in the end Heidi Marquardt is going to be a driving force that helps bookmeyer get re-elected in a landslide. Then you will have an excuse because of low voter turn out. Truth is people are tired of your bs and fortunately NIT keeps allowing your bs articles. Actually in the end because of endless rant and raves you will be a bigger reason that bookmeyer gets re-elected but you and your ego are just are not smart enough to figure that out. Matt Marquart’s sister-in-law’s letter was aimed directly at Matt. She makes doors in a factory and he is a very successful publisher who is a self starter that has carved out a sliced of the pie that is envied by her and many others living here. Stop making excuses you know to be wrong. It’s bad enough you have to hide.
She doesn’t just make doors. She is a engineer. That is why she has been on the planning and zoning commission as well as others. She has been a community advocate and volunteers her time to help promote the city. She is a role model with a positive attitude who contributes back to her community and church. More than can be said of you and the publisher of this site. If I am wrong I would welcome you to prove me wrong. Ball is back in your court.

I’m not going to address the tenor of Peter’s Op ED but two things he brings up in this piece deserve a bit of retort.

Just how was his approach “reckless”? The applicant asked for approval – nothing reckless here. A “dangerous trash burning plant” – says who? How about some facts on it? This project did not go forward because of the landfill commission populated by citizens of other communities.
2. “Bookmeyer pulled the rug out from under the downtrodden whom turned to the Human Rights agency as a means of protection against exploitation.” Another load of crap. The “downtrodden” have multiple agencies to assist them in all sorts of ways including an HRC at the state level. Reducing Mason City’s HRC down to the level of similar sized cities in Iowa is simply prudent budgeting supported by local taxpayers.

This was all about a bunch of local politicians trying to put a feather in their hat at the long term expense of the taxpayers with a hair brained scheme that no other communities would accept. Some say there was some under the table money being offered but I have not proof of that. It would not surprise me though, looking back at the Mayor and council’s pushy approach to the garbage.
Also, no homework was done prior to promoting it. A bunch of con-men out to make a fast buck at the taxpayers expense showed up and Bookmeyer’s ego trip quickly got him to sign on. Heck, the whole council swallowed his garbage too.
The Mayor and City Council did not have the approval and consensus of the citizens either. He upset the community and struck fear in the taxpayers heart with worry they would be saddled with yet another government boondoggle without studying the scheme and coordinating with the North Iowa Landfill. A lot of time and money was wasted on that garbage debacle!
As far as the Human Rights Commission goes you have promoted that nonsense before that the Citizens of Mason City still have service. That is a pipe dream. Your protecting the Mayor on this issue has clouded your thinking. Forcing the citizens of Mason City to go to Des Moines is not what is in the best interests of our local Citizens and not what they wanted. Mason City does Not have the same level of service.
You are totally wrong with your blind support of a Mayor who has gave Mason City yet another black eye with his negative behaviour and lack of compassion for Mason City Citizens.
oh Peter, let’s see a let of all your volunteer efforts and donations. that would be proof positive that you are indeed an upstanding community minded person and not a whore mongering hack.

Peter-I agree with your comments about her comments being intentional and with malice and with the goal of belittling Matt and that is a shame. It is easy to see that she is firmly in the mayors camp. Not knowing the lady at all I don’t think I would go along with your other comments about her. As far as the mayor, he is a public figure and therefore fair game. I agree with most of what you have said about the damage he has done to the city as that is a matter of public record. The comments about him being drunk I can’t support as there is no proof on that other than some people who say they saw him.
I never thought of that, but I think pEter is right. They are protecting their own reps by protecting bookee’s. If he is outted as the snake in the grass that the elderly persons know him to be, then people who supported him all along are guilty by association. This op-ed from mrs marquart was a defense mechanism. I think the people of germany did this in the 1940s. They ignored or supported the nazis while they slaughtered the jews. Kinda like when eric slaughters a bottle of scotch. Peter thank you for explaining this so plainly.

Peter, Heidi has done more for this community in her lifetime than you have and she is half your age. She is a successful business woman who was born and raised in Mason City. She has volunteered her time and served on numerous boards and commissions. So what have you and Nit done to serve and help the citizens of Mason City. I would like to know.
As far as the Mayor being supposedly drunk in public. This is getting old. Everyone knows that if this were true you would have some video and placing it on NIT. In three and half years you have nothing. If you did you would be displaying for the world to see.

@Buzz Crumcutter-you seem to be hung up on trying to prove that Peter may be compensated with money for writing what he believes. You just can’t accept that he does it because he is trying to bet out his message because he believes in what he is saying. At least he has the guts to say what he believes. I don’t always agree with his message but I do respect what he is doing. Larry, what you don’t understand by my asking how or in what way Peter (the one who doesn’t give a rats ass) is compensated, does make a difference….a big difference. In the past Peter (the servicer of married women) used to write about Max Weaver for the Globe. The way I understand it, he (Peter, the one with the balls between his legs) was compensated for those letters too. Now, even a person of your caliber should be able to figure out what is going on and see a pattern starting to emerge here. I would be willing to bet, that as the election for the Mayor and City Council seats draws closer, you will see many, many more scathing screeds from Peter. Why?? Maybe because he cares about what goes on in Mason City, but, maybe even more so because he’s getting paid.
