MASON CITY – A welfare check on an individual who did not show up for work lead to the discovery of an injured man Tuesday evening.

According to police, at about 9:20 PM, they received a phone call that requested police check on the welfare of a co-worker that had not shown up for work. Officers went to the subject’s home at 220 1st Street SW and attempted to make contact with the man but were not initially successful.

As officers checked the windows and doors at the residence – which is a triplex – they observed a bullet hole that had been fired from inside the first floor apartment and exited through a window on the east side of the residence. Officers soon observed a subject lying on the floor inside the residence, apparently bleeding, who was thought to be armed with a firearm.

Not knowing how the man had been injured – whether by himself or someone else – the officers on the scene called for additional units to secure the area while other officers forced entry and went inside the residence. First aid was administered on the injured man and he was transported to Mercy Hospital.

An neighborhood canvass was conducted by law enforcement that evening. The property was secured as a possible crime scene until the investigation was concluded. Mason City police investigators now believe that the incident was an attempted suicide. No foul play is suspected and there was no word on the man’s condition.

Poor people have a right to drugs such as nicotine and booze too! They ain’t only for you and your kind.

@Peter L.You can’t argue with that guy. He has been programmed to be a welfare baby all of his life. If it is as I suspect there is nothing there in his drug fogged mind to connect to.

I have a little experience with something like this and I can tell you he was reaching for help in many ways but no one was listening. When someone is despondent people need to listen. Sometimes it is alcohol and some times it is drugs but a lot of times it is things get out of control and they don’t know what to do about it. Drugs and alcohol do not help as they are depressnets but people use them anyway. Listen when people talk. Prayer might work after the fact (that is not proven) but listening works during the fact. Then act on what you hear.

I don’t know this young man, never heard of him but I assume because of his actions, many now have a problem. Evidentially he was despondent and tried to solve his own problems. What happens to people who can’t think for themselves and lay in a hospital? We don’t hear anything about this situation and I wonder what is going on. He needs our prayers.
