3 Hawkeyes Selected in 2013 MLB Draft

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Three University of Iowa baseball players — one incoming and two graduated seniors — were selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.

Incoming freshman Kendall Coleman was taken in the 11th round (344th pick) by the New York Yankees, while seniors Andrew Hanse and Matt Dermody were selected in the 22nd and 29th rounds, respectively. Hanse was drafted with the 668th pick by the Tampa Bay Rays, while Dermody was selected with the 835th pick by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Coleman, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound outfielder, will have the option to sign a professional contract or play for the Hawkeyes next season. The Rockwall, Texas, native was ranked No. 282 nationally by Perfect Game and 11th in the state of Texas. He was a Texas Rangers Area Code invitee in 2012, and earned preseason All-America honorable mention honors in 2012.

Coleman is the highest draftee with ties to the UI since the 2007 MLB Draft when former Hawkeye Zach Kenyon was selected with the 276th pick in the ninth round by the Kansas City Royals.

Hanse, a 6-6, 205-pound right-handed pitcher, went 3-4 with a 4.30 ERA during the 2013 season. The Marion, Iowa, native threw 46 innings, finishing with 32 strikeouts to 17 walks. Hanse opened the season as the Hawkeye closer, before joining the rotation and making seven starts. In two seasons in Iowa City, Hanse was 4-4 with a 4.64 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 66 innings.

Dermody, who was drafted a fourth time in his career by the Blue Jays, posted his best collegiate season in 2013, finishing 7-2 with a 3.64 ERA and 68 strikeouts over 94 innings. The seven wins were tied for the fifth most in the Big Ten Conference, and he pitched the second-most innings and had the fourth-most strikeouts.

The 6-5, 205-pound left-handed pitcher finished his career with a 15-17 record with a 4.55 ERA in 52 appearances (48 starts). He tossed 291 innings, where he struck out 228 batters to 86 walks. His inning and strikeout totals rank third in Iowa history, while his 52 appearances are the eighth-most all-time.

The Norwalk, Iowa, native went 3-2 with a 7.93 ERA during his freshman season with one of the victories coming in an elimination game that sent the Hawkeyes to the Big Ten Tournament title game. He went 4-6 with a 4.15 ERA as a sophomore and 1-7 with a 4.50 ERA as a junior.

Dermody previously was selected in the 26th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009, the 29th round by the Colorado Rockies in 2011, and the 23rd round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2012.
