KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 30 (UPI) — A father said his 10-year-old son’s natural curiosity paid off when he found $10,000 in a drawer in their Missouri hotel room.

Cody Schaefer of South Dakota said he picked up his three children in Kansas City, the central meeting point between his ex-wife’s home and his own residence, and 10-year-old Tyler opened all of the drawers in their room at the Hilton Kansas City Airport hotel Saturday in a search for “something cool,” The Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported Thursday.

“He looks for stuff at random,” Schaefer said. “He’s very observant.”

Schaefer said his son discovered a stack of bills in a drawer totaling $10,000.

Sgt. Randy Francis, a property and evidence supervisor for the Kansas City Police, said he was surprised no one had claimed the money as of Wednesday.

“I think I would know I was missing $10,000 pretty quick,” he said.

Missouri laws state the money can be returned to the finder if it is not claimed within seven months.

Schaefer said most of his family members agree he and Tyler did the right thing by turning the cash over to police.

“But one person said I was an idiot,” he said.

Schaefer said he doesn’t regret not keeping the money.

“I didn’t come there with $10,000 and I didn’t leave with $10,000, so it was a wash,” he said.
