Controlled burn becomes wildfire in Southern California

SAN DIEGO, May 25 (UPI) — A controlled burn in northeast San Diego County in California got out of control and turned into a wildfire covering 750 acres, officials said.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said crews were expecting to burn approximately 114 acres of brush in a largely unpopulated area east of Julian, Calif., Thursday when the wind shifted.

Agency officials said the fire got out of hand but no structures were threatened and no injures were reported.

The fire was about 30 percent contained, the agency said.

The fire was being fought by tankers and helicopters, and five engines from Fresno were moved to the scene, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
