Iowa Senate Dem’s: Governor’s “deceptive, dishonest” flyer makes false comparisons about competing health care plans (VIDEO)

DES MOINES – According to Iowa Senate Democrats, last week, Governor Branstad’s office issued a flyer making a number of false claims while comparing his health care plan with that passed by the Senate Democrats.

Senator Jack Hatch, chair, Senate Health and Human Services Budget Subcommittee, told the Iowa Senate that the governor’s claim that his plan costs less was particularly deceptive and dishonest.

Below is a partial transcript of Hatch’s point.  The entire statement can be seen at http://youtu.be/_duXj8-On8I

(Beginning at 2:48)

“It’s deceptive, dishonest, and it gives the wrong impression.

“You claim the cost to the state of your plan is $23 million and ours is $83 million dollars.

“I see what you’re trying to do here, Governor.

“You’re trying to hide the fact that you are taking:

  • $43 million in property taxes from every county;
  • $42 million from Broadlawns Hospital;
  • $13 million from the University of Iowa Hospitals, and
  • $42 million dollars in general fund money.

“Governor, don’t you know that your plan will cost the people of Iowa $162 million dollars a year, and our cost is $5 million dollars a year.

“Read our bill.  Read LSA’s fiscal note of our bill.  Read the facts, and then restate them.

“Don’t mislead Iowans and don’t leave us behind. Governor on your long trip to China, you’ll have time to read and think. I suggest that you read our bill.”
