CLEAR LAKE – A Clear Lake police officer has resigned.
Chuck Bengston resigned recently from the Clear Lake Police Department after serving since July of 2006.
Bengston, a highly-trained law enforcement officer, was also the Chief of Police in Nora Springs, Iowa for about 4 years.
Clear Lake City Administrator Scott Flory says Bengston submitted his resignation due to a personal reason and that the city intends to fill the vacancy in the police department.

Chuck is my best friend who I would trust the lives of not only myself, but my wife and children’s. I, myself, would gladly lay down my life for him without hesitation. I’ve been in some tight spots with Chuck and I have NEVER seen Chuck lose control or treat anybody unfairly. I’ve seen criminals shake his hand after it was all said and done. This is also reflected by the positive opinions and support his peers and many in the public have of him. So much so, I will not hide behind an “anonymous” name. I will, however, refrain from anonymous, trashy comments in a public forum which serve no purpose other than to run down Chuck. If you are a criminal and don’t like Chuck, I really don’t care. Quit breaking the law and you won’t get caught and arrested. If you have anything to do with his two beautiful children and chose to sit in a public forum and slander him nonstop, shame on you. Shame on you for subjecting his children to such a slanderous, hateful, gossip-mongering, deceitful and malicious environment. Way to raise those children………..
Clearly both sides are throwing stones now and making harsh accusations. However Chuck nor the girls mom are making the comments so it is a little unfair to judge the environment in which theyre being raised. It sounds like both parents are trying to move on. Let them!

Why even bother defending his childrens only real parent to his skid ball new woman? Everyone knows those kids are with their mom 24/7. Shes a strong girl to just raise her kids without a dad. However her name is being tossed around and spoken ill of by a woman that was sleeping with her boyfriend its rude and not right of a “stepmom” to be doing. I think you need to hold your tongue woman. I am not who you think I am. I know the story to. Karma is a nasty little witch and she will bring to those who deserve it, what they have coming. Chuck is a great officer, I have known him since I was a little kid living in Nora Springs before he was even Chief, he took the time out of his day when he seen us kids, to stop and talk to us, show us his car, let us hit the light/siren, I personally can say Nora Springs residents were saddened when he took the job at Clear Lake, Its officers like Chuck that make children feel safer going to the Police, so when he cites personal issues for resigning please don’t assume the worse, give some people the benefit of doubt, Thanks.

People never cease to amaze me. How do u know what he’s going through or his reason for leaving? Why do people take it upon themselves to say its better for CL that he’s gone when chances are you don’t even live in CL nor have you ever met the man. If you have had run ins with him in uniform…chances are they weren’t under the best circumstances, and that is all you know of him (or any cop for that matter). He’s a good man and took his job seriously. Just wanted what every other cop in america wants…to go home at the end of their shift. His reasons for leaving are just that….his. nothing more, nothing less. Until every man and woman in america is willing to put on the badge and do their job, they have no right to talk down on them. Someday people will realize that cops are not just a badge. Behind that badge they are human too. Just like you and I.

I never said anything about super human. People tend to talk about cops as objects, and forget they are husbands, wives, daughters, sons, and most importantly mothers and fathers. But to see what they see and do what they do and still carry on a normal life at home…yeah, I’d say they probably posses a certain element the rest of us don’t.
I’ve seen just as many cops treat subjects like they’re objects. You suggest the objects are so bad as to taint the officer because he see’s them. More hogwash.

This is the guy we are talking about? He sounds like a bad egg to me brick in the mall. Actually it looks like he doesn’t stand for wrong doing even if it does come from his fellow officers. Yep, sounds bad. Looks like there could be something fundamentally wrong with that department as previous comments have stated. If he were as bad as you claim there would surely be more than just you ranting on here about how bad he is. That entire department is a bunch of “Rubes” and one step above a Southbridge Mall security guard. Chuck was a good cop, too good for that department. It’s only going to get worse when Deb Rygg becomes the Chief.

His resignation should be viewed as a favor to the residents of Clear Lake. As law enforcement your duty is to serve and protect your community this man cares for no one but himself. Maybe he has since found a job degrading and belittling others, its what he does best.
Do you know this from a personal experience with this officer while he was on the job, or is this just a statement about him as a person in general. I personally know this man and am wondering if you had the chance to meet him while he was on the job…..while you were doing something illegal, perhaps. My son is studying to go into law enforcement largely because of the positive influence Chuck Bengstrom had on him. So, as for this being viewed as a favor to the citizens of Clear Lake, I believe ANON, you are incorrect.

from personal experience. I hope your son remembers that he works for the citizens of whatever town he goes to. And forget who signs his check. To treat everyone equal, and remember that a mayor, councilman, or head of a major business can also break the law at times. To use his best judgement when given a suggestion from any of these people.

@Anon, I am starting to place pieces of information together here, I’m starting to believe you are either, an person Chuck has arrested, or you are his CRAZY ex-girlfriend that he had while he was an officer in Nora Springs, because all this smack-talk sure sounds like drama that an Ex would bring, its unfortunate that a person with such a low self-esteem would belittle someone who is not here to defend themselves. Option A, a person he arrested before, or Option B, Crazy ex-girlfriend that is mad that he has moved on with his life and is engaged to a good girl.
