From Iowa Rep. Linda Upmeyer –
The 2012 elections have drawn to a close, and our televisions, mailboxes, and e-mail accounts have finally returned to normal, something I think we were all ready for. As Thanksgiving approaches, I’ve seen many friends participating in the “30 Days of Thanks” throughout the month of November. I also wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on some of the things for which I am most grateful.
Of course I am thankful for my family and friends, good health, and the things we often take for granted. It feels good to recount those blessings, especially now. But following a contentious election cycle, today I think of the blessings bestowed on our nation.
I am thankful that we live in a democracy that promotes an open and honest dialogue of all the issues that impact us as a state and nation. To live in a country that not only allows, but encourages the expression of different viewpoints, is a true blessing. Each election cycle, we are given the opportunity to exercise our constitutional right to vote for the candidates of our choice that will shape our future. Regardless of one’s political leanings, no one can deny what a privilege it is to have the ability to choose who will represent us at the federal, state, and local level.
I am also thankful to have grown up and lived my life in Iowa. It never ceases to amaze me what great people, with strong Midwest values, fill our great state from border to border. If there is ever something you need, nine times out of ten, your fellow neighbor is there to lend a hand. Iowans also have a strong desire to embrace hard work and new challenges. We are always striving to find more opportunities to grow, learn, and succeed. This ambitious mentality, coupled with Iowans’ humble nature, makes our state an incredibly wonderful place to establish roots and raise a family.
Finally, I am thankful for the opportunity to work for you in the Iowa House. I am honored to have gained the trust and confidence of the voters in House District 54. Thank you for your support during this past election season. I am ready to start the next General Assembly, working with newly elected members, the Governor, and the Senate to make Iowa an ever better place to live and work. My focus will remain on job creation, providing real tax relief and reform to all Iowans, enacting responsible and stable budgets, and working on healthcare solutions that make sense for you.
Please have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. I look forward to spending the holiday with my family and friends- and hope you will enjoy good food and fellowship with your loved ones as well.
