Opinion from a citizen of Northwood:
Regarding the incidents that have happened to the mayor of Northwood, Randy Severson, I think he should have been removed or resigned from office. With that said, I think the people of Northwood should be aware of the (person) that is running this town. He likes to make inappropriate comments on people’s Facebook. If you look up Theresa George on Facebook (a Northwood City Council member), you can see that the comments he writes are very disturbing. I don’t think this is appropriate for such a public figure and with his history of (legal problems). Thank you for your time.

NOTE: Northwood Mayor Randy Severson is still facing harassment charges at this time. On October 25th, the case was continued in court until an undetermined date. Mayor Severson did issue a press release in September on the charges through his attorney, Joel Yunek.
NIT felt that the above conversation between elected public officials posted in a public location where anyone could read it was newsworthy and further worthy of public scrutiny and therefore it was published.
Its fricking facebook between two adults. Dorsey is the real dbag behind all this. I here now he moved out west. Must be so the law has a harder time finding him. Wonder if he still carries that gun he bought for his ex. What a joke all this is. The only thing newsworthy about this is that the ex Chief is still lurking and probably has a hit list of people and he is crazy enough to start picking them off.
This with Leo is almost scary. If you know how he stalked and tried to wreck his ex-wife life, turning her boy friends in to stay agencies, turning her in to try and get her fired, and the list goes on. He even talked one of his girlfriends into helping him spy on her. Now he has turned his attention to the mayor, and is stalking him in the same way. One of this guys friends needs to help him. He has a major mental issue that is going to hurt someone. This is not normal behavior and he needs help. If you are a true friend please seek help for him. Mayor severson, it maybe in your best interest to step down before he physically hurts you. It is obvious he is watching your every move. I would seriously take my advice, both sides.
I have been the recipient of some of Teresa George’s hard-core porn that she shares with her bar patrons and friends of all ages over the internet. I am a pretty open-minded guy but her stuff is beyond raunchy. Animals, people, people and animals, explicit pics of genitalia, etc. And Randy, you are just being stupid especially considering you have a case pending in the court systems. Your poor mother! Leo, you are a joke. I think you used your city-issued cell phone to text threats and pics of guns to your ex-wife. You don’t need to be officially charged with anything to be fired. The text messages were enough. Move on for Pete’s Sake!! Nobody in town gives a damn about you.

Facebook is for people to speak their mind however try chose to do so. With that being said you should still use your brain when commenting on Facebook! Anyone can read that. I believe in the right to free speech and what not buy come on people that was just absolutely gross. Especially a mayor posting junk like that. What town wants to know that their mayor who they elected to help out our town makes gross comments like that and has stalked his ex! Freedom of speech or not the mayor should know better! I agree he should be asked to step down! I have heard of stories on the news where people have lost their job cause of Facebook comments, this should not be any different! It was inappropriate and frankly really gross knowing our mayor. I don’t wan this man in “charge” of our town any longer. As for the city council member I see where she did nothing wrong she just put something on Facebook, she didn’t know some perverts where going to take it that far.
So if he isn’t willing to step down, how do we go about getting him out of his position before the next election? How much longer does this guy have? It seems like he has been Mayor for a long time!

I think Mr. Dorsey HAS moved on and more power to him. But I think the point of his message isn’t that he really wants his job back. Seriously, why would he? Was he a good cop? I think so. Did he make some mistakes over 30 some years of law enforcement? Probably. But he was prepared to lay his life on the line everyday if necessary and has probably seen things that would make most of us puke.
No, the issue at hand is – contract or not – Mr. Dorsey was terminated for very similar and maybe even lesser accusations than what the mayor of Northwood has been accused of. Neither man was charged (yet), both admitted to making mistakes, and both men are high ranking public officials. The only difference is that Mr. Dorsey lost his position over these things and Mr. Severson has not. Why not?
The mayor certainly has his freedom of speech rights. I can’t imagine that includes stalking and incessant texting, but I’m sure it allows him to discuss 18″ rubber dildos (or ball gags or whips & chains) or whatever, whenever, wherever he wants. As the face and personification of this great city – as any mayor is – he might excercise some discretion though and find a less publicly viewable forum to do it in. But again, that’s up to him.
So let’s take ‘who fired who’ and ‘who’s been charged’ and ‘does he have the right to’ out of the equation completely. What we’re still left with is; the highest ranking representative of the City of Northwood exhibiting behavior that is simply unbecoming a public official and distasteful to say the least. Do the right thing Mr. Mayor, step down. Let’s try to get Northwood moving in a positive direction for a change.
Peter, you are right on with your assessment of the situation with one major difference: Leo lost his position AND his job. If Randy steps down or is thrown out, he only loses his position.
Lady justice may be blind, but it seems her scales are tipped in Mr.Severson’s favor. Lucky him.
As the former Chief of Police who was terminated from my position by the Mayor and city council because of allegations that were made regarding my personal life, why is Randy still in office? I was terminated because “possible” charges might be filed against me. To date I have not been charged with any crime that the allegations stemmed from. That’s right not one charge has been filed against me . On the other hand Mayor Severson HAS been charged with a crime for things that have occurred with his personal life but he doesn’t believe that he should step down or be removed. I fully understand that he has the right of “DUE PROCESS” and he has not been convicted of anything, but under Mayor Seversons leadership I was terminated with out my right of DUE PROCESS. The claim that he suffers from a mild brain injury is crap. He runs a business has no trouble handling that. I am sure there are people who would take advantage of his “trusting” attitude if they could. So following his logic, I should get my job back because over my 32 years of experience I saw several children who died from terrible accidents, or where beat by their care givers . I must have been suffering from some type of POST TRAUMATIC STRESS and therefore not respondsible for my actions. I will be waiting to get the call to come back to work LOL

Fed Up, I don’t think Leo is asking for his job back. He is saying that by our douche bag mayor’s logic, he should have never lost his job. I agree, it was a slimy way for Leo to have gotten the boot, since he was never charged with anything. How would you like it if your psycho ex claimed some bull and you got fired with out even having anything proven? Isn’t that scary to you. You could just lose your job for no real reason? I have never been a fan of Leo and am not upset that he is no longer on the job, but it was not right how he was removed. Randy is slime and should step down, he set the precedent. He should follow it. He can run again and if he is re-elected than it should be dropped. He should NOT be at a gathering of young children swimming with the mentoring program and I have told my children I don’t want them anywhere with him if their father or I am not there. I don’t think this man should be a mentor. That’s for sure.

I agree that the northwood city council needs an overhaul, everyone on the council are also business owners and it seems most of the decisions made about everything benefits them and their businesses and or their families. I understand everyone is human but as public officials they should have to be held to a certain amount of standards. This behavior makes all the citizens of northwood look bad and just gives this small town a bad reputation. When election time comes for these officials i can only hope that the citizens step up to the plate and elect people that have all citizens in mind not just the ones with a certain name or business. Its easy to talk about this but theres only one way to change it. VOTE THEM OUT NEXT TIME!

Regardless of the content of this Facebook conversation, which is childish at best, it is not “newsworthy” and by posting this as such, North Iowa Today is no better than any person involved in this conversation. There’s a reason this website is not respected and has no credibility to anyone with any common sense. Anyone who claims to be a journalist should recognize this as trash and should be ashamed to be involved with it. Disgusting.

As I stated, the public deserves to know how elected officials behave, especially when it is in plain view of anyone. The public can decide if this conversation is OK or not.
Matt as you well know there have been issues that we haven’t seen eye to eye on. This isn’t one of them. This is very news worthy and should be reported on. If these elected officals act like this on a somewhat public news medium then how must they act when no one is around? The people of Northwood should demand better.
That is an inappropriate conversation between the major and a city council member, period. Seems as if there is more to their relationship than just business.
I see nothing wrong with anything that was posted there… I don’t recall any amendments to the constitution that bar public figures from being human.
It is never appropriate for elected officals to talk about eighteen inch sex toys in a public forum. Children could be reading this and their parents might not be to happy with sex education being offered by the Northwood City council.
