Jeff’s Fresh Produce tries to hold on for one more week

Jeff Rasmusson and his mom, Betty Bohl

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – For most of the summer, Jeff Rasmusson and Betty Bohl, of Jeff’s Produce, have been selling fresh vegetables on the north end of Mason City.

“We started at the Kum and Go Parking Lot, but Brian, the owner of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Dojo, has been very nice and gave us permission to sell here,” said Jeff. They are now at the corner of 6th Street and North Federal Avenue.

“Betty’s my mom, and she’s been a big help. We stayed busy most of the time, but the last couple weeks have been pretty slow. Right now we have the tomatoes for 3/$1.00.”

“We get everything from the Mennonites over by Elma,” said Betty. “Everything is good and reasonable. I think we’ve stayed busy because of the lack of rain. The deer and raccoon have been eating people vegetables, or some people just don’t have a garden. We also get retired people.”

“Hopefully,” says Jeff with a sigh, looking up at the sky, “we’ll be here for another week.”

A little bit on how they felt about getting their picture taken, “I told Jeff he needed to get a haircut,” said Betty, forever being a true mom and Jeff saying, “I want mom in the picture too,” forever being a good son.
