Spencer picks up Vision Iowa funds for riverfront and trails project

(Des Moines) – The Vision Iowa Board awarded $321,000 in grants to a historic depot renovation in Osceola, white water feature in Elkader and riverfront development in Spencer. The grants were approved by the Vision Iowa Board at their meeting in Des Moines yesterday.

The project in Spencer consists of three components: a prominent pedestrian boardwalk with grand viewing plaza and other associated riverfront improvements; the installation of a 140-foot-span, 10-foot-wide bridge connecting to the city’s trail network; and paving of almost 1.3 miles of 10-foot-wide recreational trail.

Total Project Cost: $901,323
Amount Requested: $184,623
Amount Awarded: $171,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 90 days.

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 362 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $137,068,849; 10 RECAT projects have been awarded a total of $8,819,542. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for November 14, 2012, in Des Moines.
