Men Sentenced for Assault

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that two McLaughlin, South Dakota men charged with simple assault and assault by striking, beating and wounding were sentenced on June 14, 2012, by United States Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes. Kenton Walks, age 27, and William Little Bear, age 25, were each sentenced to one year in custody and a $20 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

Walks and Little Bear were indicted by a federal grand jury on October 12, 2011, and plead guilty the charges in March 2012.

The convictions arise out of a June 9, 2012 incident in which Walks, Little Bear, and others were driving around McLaughlin. At some point, they drove to a place near McLaughlin known as “Honkey Tonk” junction where an argument ensued. Walks and Little Bear assaulted the victim, an adult male.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs-Standing Rock Agency. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mikal Hanson.

Walks and Little Bear were remanded to the custody of the United States Marshals Service to began serving their sentences.
