Branstad names Steve Lukan as Director of the Office of Drug Control Policy

(DES MOINES) – Gov. Branstad today named state Rep. Steve Lukan (R-New Vienna) as the new Director of the Iowa Office of Drug Control Policy. Lukan replaces Mark Schouten, who Branstad named as Director of the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management last November.

“Steve Lukan has demonstrated himself as an exceptional leader in the Iowa House, and will be a great director of this important agency,” said Gov. Branstad. “We have seen the harmful effects of drugs across this state, and I will look to Steve to help us stay ahead of the dangerous trends that often emerge, wreaking havoc on Iowa’s families.”

“We are excited Steve is answering the call of service,” said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds. “He has a passion for this state and a genuine concern for the safety of its citizens. He will excel in this new role, and I look forward to working with him to reduce the use of illegal drugs and ensure Iowans are educated on their dangers.”

Lukan resigns his House seat today and begins immediately as director. Lukan has served in the Iowa House of Representatives for five terms, first elected in 2002. He was the ranking member for several years on the Justice budget subcommittee and oversaw the state line item for this area. He announced last year that he will not seek re-election, and a new state representative from House District 57 will be elected in the November general election.

“It has been an honor serving in the Iowa House of Representatives,” said Lukan. “I have a passion for serving this state, and I look forward to continuing my service in this new capacity. My top priority will be the health, safety and well-being of Iowans. I will work to fulfill the office’s mission and collaborate with Iowans to reduce drug use and related crime.”

Branstad also thanked Dale Woolery for his work as interim director in the Office of Drug Control Policy during the search for a new director.

Lukan, 33, and his wife Sarah reside in West Des Moines.
