LASC accused of lewd liquor code violation

Kiran Sood, Daily Gazette, Sterling, Ill. –

STERLING – The Latin American Social Club held an event Feb. 18 involving sexual activity and nudity and now must come before the city liquor commission to explain itself, the city attorney says.

If the accusations are true, the club at 2708 W. Lincolnway could lose its liquor license.

According to a hearing notice sent to the LASC, it violated the city liquor code by allowing the “performance and simulation” of sexual activity, among other things.

The activities can be “euphemistically regarded as a lingerie party and oil wrestling,”
City Attorney Ron Coplan said Thursday.

The city obtained photographs that show “some of the activities” after a city employee came across them on Facebook, Coplan said.

Club member Peter Castro, who holds its liquor license, declined to comment except to say “we’d rather wait for the [June 6] meeting and let them present their case.”

Sterling mayor and liquor commissioner Skip Lee said the purported misconduct involves “exposure of body parts and activities.”

“I want to make sure we have the whole story, the right story and that we don’t overreact or under-react,” the mayor said. “If they are true, I am very disappointed in the Latin American Social Club. [It has] a reputation as a family establishment. They have been an honorable organization over the years.”

If true, the club faces a penalty ranging from a $250 fine to revocation of its liquor license.

“We want to get their attention,” Coplan said. “This is not what we want. This is a family place.”

Alderwoman Retha Elston, also a member of the three-member liquor commission, said she was shocked when she received word of the supposed violation.

“It’s a little shocking that it happened in Sterling, Illinois,” she said.

To attend

The Sterling Liquor Commission meets at 9 a.m. June 6 at 9 a.m. at City Hall, 212 Third Ave. The meeting will include a public hearing on the violations of which the Latin American Social Club is accused.
