50 cent clothes rack helps “Cultural Crescent” business get back on its feet

by Matt Marquardt –

MASON CITY – It was a rough stretch for many businesses in the “Cultural Crescent” during Streetscape construction last year.

New Beginnings clothes consignment shop didn’t escape the misery, but the family-owned business is continuing to get back on its feet.

Owner Shirley Krutsinger each day places a rack of clothes on the sidewalk in front of her store, located at 201 N Federal Avenue.  The rack is there everyday, “Spring until Fall,” Shirley said.  The cost for the items on the rack is just 50 cents.  As I stood and spoke with Shirley, nearly everyone who passed by stopped and thumbed through the jeans, shirts, jackets, baby clothes and other items.

“It really draws a lot of people,” Shirley said.  “We add to it everyday.  We might be the only store that offers this price.”

Shirley says her store has been in business about 9 years now.  She hopes her kids can take over for her as she is looking to retire.

She says during the Streetscape construction she lost about half her income.   She said business is much improved now that all the streets are open.

“It’s going to take awhile to get caught up, but we will.”

“It’s God’s store… so it’s in his hands.”
