Softball: Iowa Central tops NIACC in six innings twice

MASON CITY, Iowa – NIACC softball showed strong defense early during both games against No. 4 Iowa Central, but lost to the Tritons in six innings twice, 9-1 and 13-4, on Tuesday evening.

The Trojans fell to 8-16 overall and are still looking for their first conference win at 0-12.

NIACC was outhit 29-7 over the two games.  Only Krista Grutz (Fr., Dubuque, IA) and Cassie Pappas (Fr., Mason City, IA) had more than two hits for the day.  Grutz had one hit in game one and pair in game two, while Pappas had singles in each game.

Iowa Central’s Brittany Madsen doubled her season homerun total with four homeruns in the two games.  She also drove in right RBI.  Morgan Allee also had a pair of homeruns on six hits, and brought in six RBI jolt the Tritons.

Early in game one, the Trojan defense held down the high-powered Iowa Central offense.  The Tritons scored one in the first and three in the third inning.  Madsen had a two-run homerun in the third to make it 3-0, and MacKenzie Van Den Berg recorded a RBI single later.

NIACC couldn’t generate any offense while facing Iowa Central pitcher Kasie Jensen.  She struck out nine NIACC batters in game one while only allowing a pair of hits.  Despite getting five walks, NIACC could not bring any of those runners around to score.

The Trojans found an unconventional way to score their only run of game one.  Beth Mildenhall (Fr., Eldora, IA) reached first on a dropped third strike, and made it to second on a passed ball.  Pappas drove her in on a single two batters later to make it 4-1.

Iowa Central busted the game open in the fifth with a three-run homer by Allee and a solo shot by Rebekah Rolling to make it 8-1.  Madsen added a solo shot in the sixth to bring up the final score.

Game two was similar in that NIACC stuck around for a while.  Madsen hit another two-run homer in the top of the first, but NIACC responded with a pair in the bottom half of the inning.  Pappas scored Mildenhall on a groundout and Hailey Eckstein (Fr., Larsen, WI) brought in Grutz on a single in the next at bat.

Iowa Central scored two in the fourth, and did lots of damage in the fifth.  The Tritons scored five runs on six hits, while Allee and Madsen recorded homeruns in that inning to make it 9-2.  Triton shortstop Hannah Koerperich had a two-run double the next inning to add to the score.

Trailing 11-2, the Trojans found a way to extend the game an extra inning.  A groundout by Katie Gross (Fr., Crystal Lake, IA) brought Grutz in to score, and a wild throw by Rolling at first to home in an attempt to throw Grutz out allowed Pappas to score from second base.

Allee brought in Iowa Central’s final runs on two-run single in the sixth, and NIACC couldn’t put together a run in the bottom half to end the game at 13-4.

The Trojans will look to get into the conference win column when they host Ellsworth on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
