NIACC softball upended by Ellsworth in sweep

MASON CITY, Iowa – NIACC softball almost broke through for their first conference win of the season against Ellsworth,  but lost both games 12-11 and 11-1 on Wednesday to drop to 8-18 and 0-12 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

Ellsworth scored two runs in the seventh inning of game one, and forced the Trojans to strand the tying run at third in the bottom half of the inning to escape with the win.

Caley Johnson (Fr., Rockford, IA) hit a grand slam in the second inning, while Cassie Pappas (Fr., Mason City, IA) added three RBI to lead the Trojans offensive production in game one.  NIACC led for almost the entire duration of game one, and had a 9-4 lead after four innings.

The Panthers had several strong performances in game one.  Lisa Karau had four hits, three being doubles, while Teegan Hunter had four RBI.

Ellsworth struck first in the opener with two in the second inning.  Allie Matheny hit the first of four game one homeruns for the Panthers with a runner on second.

In the bottom half of the second, the Trojans got hits from Hailey Eckstein (Fr., Larsen, WI) and Lisa Jorgensen (Fr., Rockwell, IA), and Courtney Stephens (Fr., LeGrand, IA) was hit by a pitch to set up Johnson’s grand slam.  Johnson knocked a pitch by Rachel Torgerson over the left field fence to gain her first homerun of the year, and give NIACC a 4-2 lead.

Ellsworth scored one in each of the next three innings, while NIACC put up five runs in the fourth.  Beth Mildenhall (Fr., Eldora, IA) and Krista Grutz (Fr., Dubuque, IA) both had RBI singles, and Pappas brought both home on her three-run homerun that inning.

Down 9-5, Ellsworth came roaring back to take the lead in the sixth.  Jessica Wenger hit a two-run homerun with one out to make it 9-7.  Hunter gave the Panthers a 10-9 edge four batters later on a three-run shot.

NIACC regained the lead in the sixth with a pair of runs on three bunts.  Katie Gross (Fr., Crystal Lake, IA) laid down a sac bunt to give allow Pappas to score from third.

A short hit by Shelby Ward (Fr., Rockwell, IA) with the bases loaded and allowed Eckstein to score after a wild throw at the plate.  Stephens tried to score as well but couldn’t beat the throw back to the plate and was tagged out by Torgerson.

NIACC got the first two batters out in the seventh before Makenzi Anderson recorded a single to keep Ellsworth alive.  She would score on a fly ball by Wenger that was misfielded by Johnson in right field.  Wenger scored on the next hit by Karau to make it 12-11.

NIACC was able to get Mildenhall over to third base with two outs in the seventh, but Eckstein popped out to deep near the left-center field wall to end the game.

NIACC never strung together hits in game two, and didn’t score until the fifth off an RBI single by Grutz.  Ellsworth pitcher Maddy Schuette struck out five Trojans and allowed only six hits.

The Panthers scored four in the first and fifth, and three in the third.  Anderson had four RBI, while Wenger had three.  Both also hit homeruns in the game.

NIACC will not play until Monday when they travel up to Riverland Community College for a doubleheader in Austin, Minnesota.  Game one starts at 3:30 p.m.
