DCI Investigating Officer Involved Shooting in Clarinda

Clarinda, IOWA – This morning the Clarinda Police Department, the Page County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Iowa State Patrol continue to investigate an overnight shooting involving a Clarinda police officer.

At approximately 3:19 AM on March 28, 2012 a Clarinda Police Department officer went to 110 North 16th Street in Clarinda in response to a 911 call received from a female in the residence. The caller indicated there was a man with a hammer outside her window.

Upon arriving at the residence the officer observed a man using a hammer to break the window of a first floor apartment, and a woman inside the apartment. As the officer approached, the man turned toward the officer and began yelling at him. The man then advanced toward the officer with the hammer in his hand and the officer fired his duty weapon, striking the subject. The subject was immediately transported to the Clarinda Regional Health Center for treatment. The medical status of the man is not known at this time.

The Clarinda Police officer was not injured in the incident. He has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

Nothing further will be released at this time. The officer’s name and the man’s name will be released tomorrow, March 29, 2012.
