Austin Daily Herald, Minn. –

OSAGE, Iowa — A 13-year-old boy is in custody in connection with a fatal shooting incident Saturday in Mitchell County.

According to the sheriff’s office, Gretchen Crooks, 37, died as the result of multiple gunshot wounds. Her death was ruled a homicide.

The incident began about 7:30 p.m. when the Mitchell County Communications Center received a 911 call from 3599 Cameo Ave. in rural Mitchell County.

“Deputies from the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office responded and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the woman inside the house,” according to a statement released Monday by Sheriff Curt Younker.

Authorities took the boy into custody without incident. He was later transported to the North Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Waterloo and he remains in custody.

A subsequent autopsy confirmed the cause of death.

The investigation into the death is continuing by the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, the State Medical Examiners Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Younker declined to release the juvenile’s name.
