Long-time city employee Lowe retires

by Matt Marquardt –

MASON CITY – A long-time city employee celebrated his retirement on Friday evening.

Mike Lowe, who worked for the City of Mason City for 39 years and 2 months, worked his last day on February 10th.  A retirement party was thrown for him Friday at Homer’s Bar.  The place was filled to capacity with well-wishing friends and adoring family.

Lowe did a variety of jobs during his long tenure as a city employee.  He had worked in the Parks and Recreation Departments as an equipment operator mowing parks and plowing sidewalks in the winter for about  25 years.   He worked at Elmwood Cemetery digging graves for about 3 years and then eventually transferred to the Streets Department as an equipment operator and foreman the last 11 years.

Lowe (pictured, center, with his sons Mick (left and Mark (right)) was known at his job as a dedicated, hard worker, his son Mark said.

“Over the years, growing up, Dad missed a few baseball games, stuff like that, due to his job.  But we understood, because of the work ethic he instilled in all of us.  He always said that without this job, it would be hard to support his family, so he always gave it his full attention.  Keeping this job all these years was his way of providing for his family.”

Lowe says that over the years, the equipment the city provides has improved, so the job is a little easier in some cases. He also said that if he could give the Mayor and City Council any advice, it would be to come out on the job with city workers to see what their jobs are really like, so that they could appreciate the work they put in.

Lowe says now that he is retired, he plans to “go to the races, not worry about answering his phone, and spend time on the golf course.”
