United Way Surpasses Goal by $60,000

MASON CITY, I.A., February 3, 2012 – United Way of North Central Iowa (UWNCI) announced they have raised $1,160,342 in the recently completed 2011 campaign.  This amount comes in 5.49-percent over the $1.1 million goal.

“The success of this year’s campaign is due to strong community support from our dedicated volunteers and United Way staff that connected with our generous regional businesses and community members,” said 2011 UWNCI Campaign Chairman Larry Elwood.  “Without each one of those volunteers and donors we wouldn’t be where we are today.  Each one made their mark on north central Iowa.  And for that, we’re very thankful.”

Nearly 6,000 donors supported the campaign, with over 100 major regional employers running United Way workplace campaigns.

“Many campaigns saw increased giving from years past, and that’s a positive sign for our local economy,” Elwood added.

The 2011 total represents a 6.2-percent increase from the $1.092 million raised in 2010.

The allocation process started mid-January with presentations and reports from community agencies.  Outcomes based programming from those agencies will be considered for funding.  Volunteer led community impact teams will make their recommendations to the UWNCI board of directors next month.

“We’re so grateful of the support from our regional community,” said Jennifer Kammeyer, UWNCI Chief Professional Officer.  “North central Iowans showed their generosity and trust in United Way to enhance our results-driven work around the building blocks of a good life:  education, income and health.”

UWNCI announced at a press conference last week their first investment in the all-new Saints Shuttle offering public transportation to and from Mason City to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

“This service not only increases access to health care, but also offers transportation for those wishing to travel between Mason City and Iowa City,” Kammeyer noted.  “Transportation is a real concern for many north central Iowans.”

The Saints Shuttle service started February 1 and runs Wednesdays and Thursdays, costing passengers $20 round trip.  For complete details and to reserve your seat, call 641-423-2262.  This venture is made possible through a partnership between UWNCI, North Iowa Area Council of Governments: Region 2 Transit, Iowa Department of Transportation, and the Federal Transit Authority.

UWNCI serves nine counties in north central Iowa:  Butler, Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Franklin, Hancock, Kossuth, Mitchell, Worth and Winnebago by investing in programs to help people, change lives and build community.
