MASON CITY – The Mason City Police Department held a press conference Friday afternoon in order to inform the public of a series of events over the last 24 hours, and to ask for their help in solving the crimes.

A pick-up truck was stolen from Shopko Thursday evening at around 8:30 p.m.

Friday morning at about 9:15 a.m., a “vague” bomb threat was called into Newman School, according to Captian Mike McKelvey.

At 9:59 a.m. Friday morning, police received word that First Citizen’s Bank, located at 33 East State Street, had been robbed.  Information seemed to link the stolen truck possibly to the robbery.

It was said that the bomb threat may have been a ruse to distract police while the bank was robbed.

The stolen truck was located today inside Mason City city limits, at 11:34 a.m.

The robbery suspect is believed to be male and made efforts to conceal his identity.  No one was hurt in the robbery and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken.  No weapon was displayed.  The FBI is assisting in the investigation.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3636.

On another note, McKelvey did follow up on a garage fire that took place Thursday evening at 910 13th Street SE. He said at the press conference that a woman refused medical treatment and that items consistant with a meth lab were removed from the residence there. The items have been sent for testing to determine if charges will be filed.

So true that the police would rather handle hard working people with one slip up whether it’s a speeding ticket or less than to get involved in bigger problems, like robberies or drugs. Dirty cops no matter what spin you put on it.

I can be 100 percent sure if your house was being broke into or you were in trouble the first thing you would do would call the police. Some of you will come back with smart comments but it is the truth. I get upset that crimes go unsolved. Bbottom line is if you were in trouble you would call them. I just want to say thank you to the fire department and police department for being there for my husband and I more than once.

Totally agree the police can only do as good of a job as we allow them. When people sit and bad mouth police Sparta/refuse to help with giving info it only slows down the process of making things better and safer…cops don’t go into this job to screw people over they do it to help

I’m sorry but everyone knows that if mcpd is called into a place where a fight broke out they always wait till its over and then they show up. They know where all the drug houses are yet they do nothing. Heck even a blind man without a stick could find them in this town. How many times they get called to a methlab house? Yet month after month they are still there. No mcpd needs to grow some balls and start cracking down. Just because they look the other way doesnt mean the problem goes away.

I think its more on the Judges keep letting them out. There are more suspended sentences and suspended fines than ever. If the state has no money why suspend all these fines?? And what about all the people from BeJe escaping all the time, they come and go as they please out of there.

Sir, you have not a clue. Most of the other commentators here suffer the same affliction!

Do any of you understand the work of the police at all? Do you know what it takes to develop a case? (A case that will get a conviction in a court of LAW, not the ones in your own minds.) Heck, most don’t even know what laws are (or they would not make the silly comments they have).

I am willing to wager that the negative nellies of hate and discontent, could not do the job of an MC PD officer. First off, you ain’t got the guts, pure and simple. Report after report in their records show how they are physically, and verbally abused by perpetrators. I personally have watched them run into burning buildings, wade in ice cold water, and faced other dangers that the average officer in most other Agencies also face.

After reading comments here, and elsewhere in Mason City for a number of years, there is an inflection that leads me to believe, the hate for our Police is based upon self-serving interests, or jealousy. Or, there is a possibility you are a member of that church across from Big Blue.

They are doing the best they can, but when the Community (that would be you, yes the one’s putting them do)does not back them it makes there job a lot harder for them to do. So put down your Gin and Juice and go out and do something with your Community. Let me guess you don’t like the cop’s cause you have a few DUI’s and drug bust.

I guess if you don’t have a job or a means to live, you resort to crime and drugs. Hey, good job MC for running ERS out of town. We don’t need any jobs here! This town is pathetic.

Don’t assume unemployment is a cause for robbery. There’s several people in Mason City, most of which, are making too much for assistance and not enough to pay bills.
