Teen burglar admits to crime

John Mangalonzo, The Hawk Eye, Burlington, Iowa –

When Logan Jacob Wall’s case was brought before Des Moines County juvenile court, the 17-year-old was charged with 10 counts of third-degree burglary.

That number was reduced in half – five counts – when his case was waived to adult court.

On Monday, the teen who authorities said perpetrated several break-ins in the West Burlington area in 2010, was allowed to plead guilty to three counts of third-degree burglary.

However, as part of the agreement, Wall will be responsible for paying restitution on all of the counts originally filed against him.

In exchange for the guilty plea, Des Moines County prosecutors said they will ask for no more than probation by way of suspended prison terms.

The maximum the teen could get is five years in prison for each count.

Prosecutors specifically focused on the June 1, 2010, burglary at Heartland Packaging Co., 506 West Burlington Ave., along with the two break-ins at West Burlington Christian Church, 545 Melville Ave., in June and July that same year.

Wall also was charged with breaking into a car in June of 2010, which will be dismissed at the end of the appeal period, also part of the plea agreement.

Authorities said money was taken from the victims and, at one point, the teen took beverage cans in at least one instance.

Investigators were able to lift fingerprint and blood evidence from the crime scene, which was turned over to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation crime laboratory in Ankeny for further analysis. Results of those tests were returned and authorities said the DNA matched Wall’s.

Police also found shoe prints with unique patterns they say matched shoes the teen owned.

Wall is set to be sentenced March 19.
