Combative Mason City man bites officer

MASON CITY – Shortly after 9 pm on Wednesday, December 15th, officers were called to the 700 block of 4th Street SW to talk to 29 year-old Jon Ramon of Mason City who said he needed assistance and was being followed by someone. The responding officers spotted Ramon at the intersection of South Monroe and 5th Street SW.

Ramon began to run through the intersection, acting erratically and eventually went inside Culver’s restaurant. While inside the restaurant, he went behind the counter and attempted to climb out the drive through window.

Two officers made contact with Ramon outside the restaurant and while speaking to him, he grabbed a handful of rocks from the landscaping and threw them at the building, breaking a window. No customers or employees were injured.

When officers attempted to arrest Ramon, he bit an officer’s thumb and would not release his bite for some time.

The injured officer transported himself to the emergency room at Mercy North Iowa for treatment and was later released. At this time, the injured officer will not be able to return to duty.

Ramon was taken to jail and charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, a class D felony; criminal mischief in the third degree, an aggravated misdemeanor; interference with official acts, an aggravated misdemeanor; and disorderly conduct, a simple misdemeanor.
