CLEAR LAKE – On Thursday November 03, 2011 at approximately 7:00 a.m. Officers from the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office and Clear Lake Police Department stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Highway 18 just east of Balsam Avenue in Cerro Gordo County. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed the vehicle contained approximately 3 ounces of supected marijuana. The driver of the vehicle, Anthony Jacob Schmitt (age 28) of 302 Highway 18 Whittemore, Iowa, was arrested and charged with the following offenses: Possession of Marijuana With the Intent to Deliver, Class “D” Felony and Failure to Affix Drug Tax Stamp, Class “D” Felony. Anthony Schmitt was transported to the Cerro Gordo County Jail where he was held on the charges.
As a result of the traffic stop and arrest a search warrant was executed at 302 Highway 18 Whittemore, Iowa where Anthony Schmitt resides. The search of the Schmitt property revealed several pounds of suspected high-grade marijuana and an elaborate marijuana growing operation. The marijuana growing operation contained equipment and supplies to produce and harvest marijuana in large quantities. Over 200 marijuana plants at various stages of maturity were seized along with equipment and supplies to operate the illegal marijuana growing operation. The estimated potential street value yield of the cultivated marijuana, marijuana plants, along with the materials and equipment associated with the marijuana growing operation is suspected to be in the hundreds of thousands dollar range.
The following agencies were involved in this investigation: Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Clear Lake Police Department, Mason City Police Department, Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office and the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force.This investigation is on going and further charges are possible.
