MASON CITY – A group affiliated with Occupy Wall Street held a demonstration in Mason City’s Central Park on Saturday.
The event started at 9 a.m. and was scheduled to go through the afternoon hours.
Chad Schaffer helped organize the event but wanted to make it clear that he is not the “leader” of the movement locally. “The Globe published something, saying I am the ‘leader’ of this, which is not true at all. They also published my name, phone number and address, which they got wrong. Why they published that, I have no idea.”
Schaffer says the movement has no true leader, it is a movement of people. “Everyone has their own opinion and voice. This is a leaderless movement.”
The demonstration, or “general assembly” as it was called, was held in Central Park, right across from the Chamber of Commerce and Bank of America Offices. “Somewhat symbolic of the power structure we are speaking of,” one person said.
Occupy Wall Street is a grassroots movement that has recently sprung up, and held demonstrations all over the country.
