(DES MOINES) ñ Gov. Terry Branstad today announced the appointees to a committee charged with raising funds to commission the statue of Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, which will be sent to the United State Capitol Building. The committee was created by House Joint Resolution 16, which brings the statue of James Harlan from Washington, D.C. back to Iowa and replaces it with the statue of Dr. Borlaug. |(DES MOINES) ñ Gov. The committee was created by House Joint Resolution 16, which brings the statue of James Harlan from Washington, D.C. back to Iowa and replaces it with the statue of Dr. Borlaug.
“I am pleased to announce the seven members of the Norman Borlaug statue committee,” said Branstad. “I am confident that this committee will work diligently to raise the funds necessary to commission the creation, transport the James Harlan statue back to the Iowa statehouse, and make arrangements with the United States Capitol architect to install the new statue.”
House Joint Resolution 16 established a Capitol Statuary Fund, which is administered by the Department of Cultural Affairs. All funds the committee raises shall be used for constructing, transporting and installing the Borlaug statue. Funds remaining after the statue exchange will be used to restore the statue of James Harlan.
The committee may accept gifts, grants, bequests and other funds, including but not limited to state or federal funding and in-kind contributions for deposit in the fund.

John H. “Jack” Thomson, Chairman and CEO, Cresco Union Savings Bank, Cresco
A Cresco, Iowa native, Dr. Norman Borlaug is referred to as the “Father of the Green Revolution” and is known for his advancements in the wheat science. Dr. Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in 1970.
