The discussion focused on helping individuals and small employers compare private health insurance options.

“Helping individuals and small businesses understand their health care options will make health insurance companies more accountable while improving both the affordability and quality of health care,” said Steckman.

The Affordable Care Act called for an establishment of a new Affordable Insurance Exchange to help individuals and employers compare options based on price, quality and other factors. The sessions provided an opportunity for state legislators around the country to learn about the new program and be able to add their input as to what should be provided for those seeking affordable and quality health insurance as well as making comparative information accessible.

“I was honored to be able to participate in this critical new step to help small businesses compare and afford health insurance for their employees,” concluded Steckman.

The conference was held on August 24, 2011 and was sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services. Iowa’s Health Insurance Exchange is set to be launched by January 1, 2014.
