Workers’ Memorial Day ceremony honors Iowans killed in the workplace

MASON CITY – The North Iowa Nine Labor Council hosted a Worker’s Memorial Ceremony on Saturday at the VFW in Mason City. Those in attendance remembered workers killed or injured on the job.

During calendar year 2010, 51 Iowans died from OSHA related injuries in the workplace and 6 Iowans lost their lives while serving their country in the military. Additionally, untold numbers of Iowans die each year from the long-term effects of toxic exposures in the workplace.

Ken Sagar, President of the Iowa Federation of Labor, told NorthIowaToday.com that “Workers should be remembered for the sacrifices they make in the workplace.”

According to flyers at the ceremony, “The one-vote Democratic majority in the Iowa Senate is the only thing stopping Iowa from being the next Wisconsin, Ohio or Indiana” inreference to the collective bargaining rights of workers in Iowa.
