It is not too late for Individuals to apply for a volunteer Parks Ambassador position assigned to the City’s Park Watch program; however, the deadline is drawing near. According to Mary Zishka the City’s volunteer service coordinator, applications will be accepted for a couple of more weeks. Applicants that are accepted into the program must complete the next training session which is scheduled for March 23.
Park Watch volunteers have been assisting law enforcement officers by patrolling designated city parks and have been responsible for helping to reduce acts of vandalism in Mason City since 2006. They are trained to recognize suspicious activity and to effectively report it to law enforcement.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, possess motor vehicle transportation and have a valid driver’s license. The training session, which is delivered by staff from the Mason City Police Department, is required prior to patrol assignment and those chosen to participate must first pass a local background check.
