The Sixth Annual Cannonball Day line up has been announced by Friends of the 457, the volunteer group working in conjunction with the City of Mason City to restore and preserve the 1912 Minneapolis & St. Louis RR steam locomotive located in East Park. Cannonball Day will be held on June 25.
The theme of the event this year is “It’s All About Kids.” Cannonball Day provides a venue for kids and their families that encourages healthy living and lifestyles. All activities during the event are sponsored by area businesses and individuals.
The annual Cannonball Kids Fun Run will return. Opportunities for kids 5 ñ 6 years include a ½ mile run; 7 ñ 8 years include a ¾ mile run; 9 ñ 10 years include a 1 mile run and 11 ñ 13 years include a 1 ½ mile run.
New to the event this year is the Bill Riley Talent Search. Talent acts in two age divisions with prizes and a chance to advance to the Iowa State Fair will be featured.
More information for both events can be found under ‘Announcements’ at www.friendsofthe457.org.
Entertainment, activities, fun and food (including the ever-popular Mason City Evening Lions Club BBQ chicken dinner; dine in or drive up curbside) are on tap for a fun filled day.
Funds received during Cannonball Day help with the continued restoration and preservation of the locomotive, a premier display of a steam era locomotive which has attracted over 38,000 visitors since the preservation project began in 2003.
