WASHINGTON, D.C. ñ Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, today issued the following statement on the budget protest in Wisconsin:
“States around the country are facing tough budget decisions ñ just as we are here in Washington. But what does it say about our priorities when we pass tax cuts for the wealthiest, yet ask public employees who are already being stretched thin to give even more? These are our nation’s teachers and caregivers ñ people our families rely on each day who are living within their means. Yet, those in the upper income bracket are not being asked to sacrifice anything. That’s unfair.
“In Wisconsin, public servants are being scapegoated and budget cuts are being used as an excuse to undermine workers’ rights. That’s no way to go about building consensus and it’s no way to treat American workers.”
