The Mason City City Council met Tuesday night, and voted on the following action items on the agenda.|The Mason City City Council met Tuesday night, and voted on the following action items on the agenda:

– Council voted 6-0 to purchase a Harley Davidson motorcycle for the Police Department at a cost of $1. It will be equipped with sirens and emergency lighting. The city would pick up the cost of insurance.

– Council voted 6-0 to award a contract for services related to a Newman School safe room project to Waggoner & Weininger architectural firm and Yaggy Colby architectural firm as well as Chosen Valley Testing for other professional services related to the project.

– Council voted 6-0 to approve the purchase of four Crown Victoria Police Pursuit vehicles from Mason City Ford.

– Council voted 6-0 AGAINST hiring a consultant for advice on a franchise agreement with Alliant Energy. An Alliant spokesman said at the meeting that if no franchise agreement is in place by October of 2011, then the City would retroactively be billed for any utility moves done over the summer. So far, the City has not been charged for any such moves, according to the official. Several utility moves are required to be completed this summer due to various construction projects underway.

– Council voted 6-0 to approve a zoning change that would allow fences in the Z5 downtown district.

– Council voted 4-2 against of waiving penalties assessed against the North Iowa Fair for an overdue water bill.

– Council voted 4-2 in favor of an amendment to item #22 on the agenda, which reads as a discussion about appointments to the Human Rights Commission. The amendment stated the Council wishes the Mayor to move forward with appointments to the Commission by March 1, 2011. Appointments have to be brought forward by the Mayor from applicants, OK’d by the commission, and then voted in by the City Council.
