Update: Federal Avenue getting asphalt walkways right now

Asphalt walkways are being installed despite the City Council taking no action on the issue at last night’s City Council meeting.|NorthIowaToday.com was tipped off that asphalt walkways are being installed this morning in Federal Avenue along the Streetscape project area all the way from the north entrance to Southbridge Mall to 4th Street.

One business owner actually called NorthIowaToday.com to tell us about the walkways, on the condition of anonymity. “There would be lawsuits if this wasn’t done,” when asked where the funding was coming from. “The City Council is acting on a policy of brinkmanship,” he continued. “I got 2 inches of water in my basement due to the construction, and that bill will get passed on to the City.”

Max Weaver also called NorthIowaToday.com about the asphalt walkways. “I made a mistake not seconding the motion to discuss the walkways. I never second anything. The Mayor had no leadership on this.”

Mark Rahm, City Engineer, says the walkways would cost $18,500 to install and that there was little time left to get them done. “They (Heartland Asphalt) would be shutting down their asphalt plant this Friday, so time would be of the essence here.”
