City Council entertains the idea of allowing “adult cabarets” downtown

The City Council and Mayor Eric Bookmeyer of Mason City heard a colorful exposition from At-Large Councilman Max Weaver Tuesday night about how “adult cabarets” or “gentlemen’s clubs” could work in downtown Mason City, or at least should be looked at as a possibility.|The City Council and Mayor Eric Bookmeyer of Mason City heard a colorful exposition from At-Large Councilman Max Weaver Tuesday night about how “adult cabarets” or “gentlemen’s clubs” could work in downtown Mason City, or at least should be looked at as a possibility.

Citing examples in Duluth, Minnesota, Mr. Weaver explained that “I think we’re overprotecting ourselves a little too much… it works there. I would hope that we would re-address this. If we look at what we’ve got right now, there’s not much activity happening down there and we’re throwing twenty millions dollars at it right now.”

Mr. Weaver says his concept is to contact the communities where this works and get ideas from them regarding any law enforcement or other issues an adult business might bring.

The discussion stemmed from an ordinance that recommended more clear definitions for adult oriented businesses.

Mr. Weaver proposed an amendment to “direct staff to insert language for adult caberet in the downtown core” or zoning district 5. The ordinance with the amendment passed a vote by the Council, 4-2.
