MASON CITY – The Mason City Youth Task Force will make a presentation at a Mason City City Council work session tonight requesting an ordinance be passed that they say would help curb the use of plastic bags.

The ordinance would place a five cent user fee on plastic shopping bags from 2010 to 2015 to target a 20% reduction of plastic bag usage within five years, with the option of renewing the fee ordinance if usage has not declined as hoped.

The City would need to send letters and report forms to all businesses with sales tax permits.

The City Finance Department would distribute the fee revenue to the budget of City entities as outlined in the ordinance.|
