Daniel Jay was born February 4, 1959 in Mason City, the son of Harold Joseph and Ruth Ardis (Cleveland) Mathahs. Growing up in Kensett, Daniel attended Northwood Kensett High School. Soon after, Daniel went to work behind the wheel of a semi. For almost 48 years Daniel enjoyed time on the road, hauling grain for local elevators. He also enjoyed many years of farming with his brother.

Throughout Daniel’s life, the outdoors was the thread that wove through every chapter. A seasoned truck driver, his heart belonged to the world beyond the asphalt. Whether tracking game through the woods, casting lines into the tranquil waters, or revving his bike along roads and trails, Daniel was in his element. His annual fishing expeditions to Canada were not just trips but cherished reunions with friends, where laughter echoed through the wilderness around them. Even when confined indoors by health, he found solace in the whispers of the trees and the company of visiting animals. May the wind in the leaves and wildlife sightings carry whispers of his memory to comfort us.

Surviving are his brother, Patrick (Nancy) Mathahs of Northwood; nephew and niece, Brock Mathahs and Shana (Bradley) Brunsvold, all of Northwood; great-niece and great-nephew, Piper and Callan Brunsvold; as well as many extended family and cherished friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Harold and Ruth; sister, Rebecca who died in infancy; and a great-nephew, Aidan Brunsvold.
