How Safe Is the Privacy of Twitter Users?

In recent times, there have been several negative news about Twitter as some information was declared publicly by its previous chief security officer. It was stated that the social media giant had obvious inadequacies in its data privacy procedures. In this article, we will discuss how safe the privacy of Twitter users is.

How Serious Were Twitter’s Data Privacy Issues?

One of the allegations made by the company’s former security chief, Peiter Zatko, is that Twitter provides access to user information to governmental agencies. However, employing data removal services will protect your privacy in such situations.

According to Zatko, Twitter relies heavily on funds from several Chinese organizations that use the platform to access the private data of Chinese users. These organizations use the information gathered from the social media platform to acquire the details of Chinese locals to detect their identities. This is significant as owning a Twitter account is prohibited in China and Chinese locals can be prosecuted for it.

Amongst the claims made by the former Twitter chief security officer is that the social media platform displayed voluntary ignorance in its operations. Zatko further claimed that the company classifies millions of spam-bot accounts as valid users, which prompted Elon Musk to file a court case against the organization.

The aforementioned allegations were cataloged with the Justice Department and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. They have also been transferred to several congressional councils, which include the Senate Judiciary Council. Senator Dick Durbin declared that the allegations made against Twitter could display several data privacy and protection threats for users.

Elon Musk’s takeover

After several months of court cases, Elon Musk has been established as the owner of Twitter. On the 27th of October 2022, he concluded a $44,000,000,000 deal to purchase the social media platform. In a note to advertisers, Musk claimed that the need for having a “common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs” could be debated in a “healthy manner” was among the motivating factors for his acquisition of the tech giant. In addition, he mentioned the need for “advertising done right”. However, it remains to be seen how Musk will tackle the issue of data privacy.

How Can Social Platform Users Protect Their Privacy Online?

In the modern age, the data of social media users (and users of the Internet as a whole) is under one form of threat or the other. Data merchants from different fields are always trying to buy, examine, and trade the personal information of social platform users for their profits. Cybercriminals are constantly attempting to access the profiles of social media account holders and get a hold of sensitive financial data.

The less information an individual has on the Internet, the safer he or she is. To keep sensitive data off the hands of third parties, you should consider utilizing several security procedures which include removing your name from Google search, using anti-virus software and virtual private networks, and avoiding oversharing as much as possible.

Final Thoughts

Although a lot of information has been declared publicly about Twitter’s obvious failures in its data security techniques. You can safely use its platform by taking proper security measures to assist you in protecting your private data from being used by data brokers.
