DES MOINES – An Iowa Senator minced no words in placing blame on Republicans for sick children across the state, stricken with the dreaded Delta virus.
Senator Zach Wahls told Iowa Republicans, “You Own the Delta Surge. Stop gambling with our children’s lives. Start following the science. We need to listen to public health experts and epidemiologists, not Republican politicians and horse de-wormer salesmen.”
His full statement reads:
COVID isn’t going away because Kim Reynolds and Iowa Republicans aren’t doing anything to make it go away. Our return to normal continues to be pushed further and further into the future because Republicans continue to fail to do anything to stop the spread of the Delta variant.
The Governor and the Republican legislature have made clear: they own every missed class, every canceled football game, every missed day of work caring for a sick child, every closed business. The Iowa Republican ban on local communities following public health advice was a mistake. And rather than learning from their mistakes, Iowa Republicans are gambling with the safety and health of Iowa children. They are doubling down on a bad hand. They own the Delta Surge.
Governor Reynolds, you can make a big difference in Iowa’s fight against COVID. Stop telling Iowans what to do and just let Iowans make their own decisions about the health and safety of their local school children, and their communities.
If we have learned anything about the fight against COVID-19, it’s that one-size-fits-all policies don’t work. We need to listen to public health experts and epidemiologists, not Republican politicians and horse de-wormer salesmen.

Governor Reynolds IS allowing Iowans to make their own decisions regarding this disease (that has a 0.26% fatality rate in the general population and a 0% fatality rate in school aged children). It is people like Zach that are trying to control others with their unfounded ideals and refuse to listen to licensed medical professionals. Please stop voting for people like Zach.

Schools and communities DO have that freedom. You CAN wear a mask if you want and you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. That is freedom. Our schools regulate the dress of students every day. What is one more required item? School boards are supposed to reflect the views of their community. If they decide masks should be required, that is the community’s decision, not the governor’s. The right is all for local decision-making until it interferes with their agenda.
The right has made this a political issue by their refusal to work for the public good. This disease is once again overwhelming our health care facilities. I have never understood the Republican idea that health care should be an individual decision. If that were truly what they wanted, then they would make health care affordable but the past administration did nothing on that even when they controlled both the Senate and the House and the Presidency. Health care isn’t a right but it certainly should be attainable by everyone.
What schools around here regulate dress? Do you know the efficacy of wearing a mask against corona virus transmission? Which healthcare facilities around here are at capacity? What percentage of patients in these healthcare facilities are there because of Corona? If any healthcare facilities have capacity issues, what departments have these issues and is it a problem with facilities or labor availability? How does current healthcare facility usage compare with historical averages? Infectious disease experts have noted that some individuals seem to be ‘super spreaders’ of Corona virus while others don’t seem to shed the virus at all (BTW, children fall into this latter category). Should we identify these ‘super spreaders’ and put them in encampments?

I have a feeling you need to learn how businesses work before spewing the Democratic rhetoric of “overwhelming our health care facilities”.
Hospitals don’t make money unless the beds are full, that is FACT. When Covid came knockin, all these places hired personnel and expanded with BIG dollar signs in their eyes. They had to cancel all their bread and butter elective surgeries (there went the profit margin), and then they had all these extra people on the payroll and all these empty beds.
A little time goes by, they start cutting hours, then flat out laying off. Well, the staff still need to put bread on the table, so they took other jobs. Then here comes the second wave, healthcare facilities are shorthanded,because they laid off everyone possible to maintain a profit margin. Nurses and CNAs are covering maximum number of patients already, so, there are many wings/halls/rooms shutdown. The facilities being overwhelmed is their own fault, for listening to the Fraudster Fauci.
The only way the facilities will get workers back, is by paying outrageous wages plus perks. Then who can afford to use the services?
Only the super wealthy can afford it now.
