MASON CITY – An iconic Mason City ice cream parlor is re-opening, a community organization is reporting.

Birdsall’s ice cream shop closed in 2020. Later, the owner of Mason City’s best-known ice cream shop, David Vaughn Escher, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2020. The town has missed the tradition of stopping in for a sundae or a cone on a warm day ever since.

However, today it is reported by Visit Mason City that new owners are taking over and preparing to re-open the shop. Anne and Gary Schmit, along with Marc Murray and Michelle Murray appear to be helping get things opened back up.

A sign on the building proclaims “new owners” and “opening soon”.

I suspect many of you that posted your cutesy words on this story are the same who complain all the time about Mason City and how you wish it could return to the “good old days” and when a business re-opens, or something is done is help Mason City, you turn into complainers and snowflakes who can’t resist expressing your dominant traits – ignorance and hate. Go suck an egg and get your ice cream from a business that takes your money and puts it in their bank in some other city.

Some ingredients never melt.

vanilla special

It should be fine just avoid VANILLA

No shit hopefully there gonna use new RECIPES !!

YMCA SAUNA SWEET VANILLA!!!!! Haha now thats FUNNY !!!

If you are 10, it’s funny.

If you understand reality…it is funny

Is Mark coming out of retirement to pass on all the recipes?

It was like $5 for a single scoop sundae last time i was there, 6 years ago. no thanks.

I agree, the place is over rated.

SWEET !! Hopefully we still don’t have to worry about the vanilla sex offender ice cream. Hahahaha. Or what they called YMCA Sauna Sweet Vanilla… lol

This news is GREAT we need to keep the old fashion Ice Cream Parlors and Mom & Pop stores going. They are unique. I don’t know about other people, but I get really tired of the big box stores that have everything for a one stop shop. I like a variety of stores to shop in sometimes.

If downtown Mason city could accomplish that and call it River City Square. They may be in business, all those empty buildings could be put to good use.

Glad you can afford 1 and a half times more that something is worth

The big box stores Don’t have unique things, and that what makes mom & Pop stores their own.

Need I mention Mason City has a program going for owners, so they can fix up their buildings, or they use too.

And you pay for it with their prices
