Obituary for Betty Jean Johnson
Betty Jean Johnson, 87, of Northwood, died Saturday, May 15, 2021, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 9th St. N., Northwood, with Rev. Becky Sogge officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Betty was born November 4, 1933, the daughter of Lester John and Bessie Beulah (Peebles) Ruby in Spencer, IA. She married Virgil Johnson on February 21, 1953, in Arkadelphia, AR.

Following high school, Betty attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. While living in Iowa, she worked on the family farm while raising her family. In 1975, Betty and Virgil moved to Vancouver, WA where she was a bookkeeper for Grover Electric. Nearly 20 years later, they returned to Iowa.

Betty was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood. She liked working with ceramics, playing the piano, camping, quilting, shopping, and having tea with friends. She was also a great cook and baked delicious treats. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her family; especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her children, Kathy (Leon) Plantz of Oronoco, MN, Mark Johnson of Northwood and Mike Johnson of Joice; grandchildren, Eric (Karen) Peters, Brian Plantz, Christa Keehr, Travis (Brittany) Johnson and Carly (Noble) Walkner; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Keehr, Samantha Plantz, Vayda and Frankie Walkner; siblings, Dorothy Berschman, Delores Rinden and Jim Ruby; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter-in-law, Dolores “Dee” Johnson; and siblings, Donald, Eldon and Russell Ruby.
