A Republican governor basically forcing action 8 down the throats of landlords? She should spend a month in mason city…. maybe look at how our crime rates have increased since we became inundated with “housing voucher” recipient’s. This is bullshit.
You are drunk. The law she signed says the opposite of what you think.
The owner of the property should have the right to accept or refuse to rent/lease/sell to anyone they want to. The govt. has to realize it does not have the right to take away certain of our basic rights. The person bought the property, pays taxes and upkeep on the property, so how does the govt. feel they should have the right to tell the owner how to handle their own property?

Two things really wrong with this headline:
1st – the Governor signed a bill that ALLOWS the person offering a place for rent to discriminate based on whether or not the person is using a housing voucher. The bill says that no county or city can adopt an ordinance or regulation that says a landlord can say no to a prospective renter if that person is using a voucher from the government. It was written to allow landlords to say no to low-income renters. In case you don’t know who those low-income renters are, they tend to be minorities so this is another white supremacist bill.
2nd – Although I wouldn’t put it past the Republicans, hosing someone is still against the law.

You’re right, this new law allows landlords to discriminate against low-income minorities. But since there are far more low-income white people in Iowa on the Federal Section 8 housing assistance plan, they too can be discriminated against by landlords. It’s typical Republican hate the poor legislation.

Years ago, I repaired damage to rentals. The places that were ALWAYS tore up the worst were the ones in “voucher ville”. Those people would utterly destroy the places, then bitch and moan about being discriminated against, ” Look at the shit hole I have to live in!”, ” Why landlord live in nice place an we get this garbage?”, ETC.
We totally gutted a 2 bed 2 bathroom house, remodeled it. 6 months later the section 8 assholes moved out(forcible eviction).
The last straw, that let the landlord evict, was when they parked the van in the living room, she had her hair done and it was raining (she was so drunk, and by the drugs they found in the house, probably stoned, worse than drinking concrete).
Landlord had to have Hazmat cleanup and dispose of the house due to contaminates from their drugs (yes they were making).
Yes, a horror story, but, most don’t want the extra Bovine post digestive results(read as Federal or State HOOPS) to jump through to get their payment. Then there is the waiting for the payment, sometimes up to 6 months. And how hard it is to get rid of the “renter” when they are damaging/destroying your property. Or when the “renter” quits paying utilities and to fix and re rent the place, the landlord has to pay.

You know only the FB and Youtube version of history. Pick up a real United States History book and read it. Read about the Democrats and Republicans and their philosophies both during the Civil War and the Civil Rights period of our history. I know your attention span probably won’t let you concentrate for over 1 minute at a time, but keep at it.
Your problem is that you only read the easy parts. Look into how the parties changed over the years then you might be able to add something to the conversation. The RepublicaQn party of today is more aligned with the Democrats of the 1860s. The idea of states’ rights is a plank of the present day RepublicQns as is making it harder for minorities to vote which aligns to the 1960s Democrats. In addition, Trump is a racist.
The correlation between the increase in housing vouchers or section 8 and crime committed by people from disenfranchised urban centers moving to small communities from places such as chicago or Detroit to places like mason city is undeniable it isnt white supremacist to want to avoid drug dealing, violent crime, child neglect/abuse, assualt, sexual assualt, robbery etc. Simple fact is the majority of the people in low income situations despite ethnicity tend to commit crime. We need less of that and more knocking down low rent properties to build homes that attract people who make and spend money in the community. Not people who directly influence and perpetuate the overwhelmingly negative aspects of mason city, this town is most famous for its failure and shady reputation. It isnt seen in a positive light by anyone but new transplants and ppl who make money off of pointless projects like skywalks and hotels. Mason city needed to figure its bs out a long time ago, encouraging loan income housing isnt a positive step. Facts over feelings.
In the last few years, since North Iowa has gotten so many Section 8 transplants for Shitcago and Deathtroit area, how many shootings and murders have there been?
The earliest I could find was in Northwood, Iowa back in 2013. A woman named Justina Marie Smith was stabbed to death by Tyrone Washington Jr. he was caught in the Quad Cities trying to get back to Shitcago.
This is more the “norm” that we get as transplants, once in a while, we actually get some that do want to better their lives. they are the exception, not the rule.
