GRUNDY CENTER – On Wednesday, April 21, 2021, Michael Lang of Grundy Center, was released by University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and transported by law enforcement authorities to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office where he made his initial appearance. Lang, age 41, has been charged in the shooting death of Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith in an attempt to arrest Lang who was barricaded in his home.
Lang has been charged with the following offenses:
First-Degree Murder, a Class A Felony, resulting in the death of Sergeant Jim Smith.
Attempt to Commit Murder, a Class B Felony, unlawfully and intentionally attempted to cause the death of Troopers in the wheeled armored personnel carrier.
Assault On A Peace Officer, a Class D Felony, resulting from the assault of a Grundy Center police officer with the intent to inflict serious injury upon the officer.

Lang has been transported to the Black Hawk County Jail where he is being held on a $3,000,000 cash bond.

Good. Hopefully nobody applies to become a cop anymore. What kind of irresponsible idipt parent let’s their kid go down a path where literally everyone will hate them and they could get killed at work any day? What kind of adult makes the choice to take a thankless and dangerous job which makes them everyones enemy? Nobody likes police and police are essentially worthless. We should encourage kids to be something important and positive. Cops are worthless, they dont have any requirement to protect and serve and as another commenter said, they show up after the damage is done and write reports and try to push ppl to admit guilt even when they aren’t because cops are to lazy to do their work anyway. The less ppl we have becoming cops maybe we just wont have cops eventually. We dont need them. The community can police itself. If you cant mind your own business and be quiet without stealing, hurting or harassing people you may find yourself in a ditch, that’s justice. What isnt justice is what we see from our local courts and cops on a weekly basis. Letting child molesters and violent criminals out with nothing more than probation while incarcerating teens and twenty somethings for pot or whatever victimless non violent “crime” they get caught for. That happens all the time.in north iowa, career criminals and drug addicts get treated so well and non violent offenders and soft drug users get it up the butt hard as the judge can give it. It’s almost as if theres some type of corruption around here, almost like they want to ruin the future of those young kids so they can take their opportunities away and keep them in the system their whole life, almost like it’s all about profit and not a single other factor.
