Mason City man’s car totaled after elderly woman runs stop light in Charles City

CHARLES CITY – A Mason City man’s car was totaled after an elderly woman ran a stop light in Charles City.

The accident occurred on April 5, 2021. Officers with the Charles City police department were called at 11:56 AM to the intersection of Highway 18 and Clark Street for a two-vehicle accident. A 2010 Ford Taurus owned by 41-year-old Matthew Bradley of Mason City was traveling eastbound on Clark Street when it was struck by a 2013 Chevy Captiva operated by 83-year-old Caroline Gabel of Charles City. Gabel was traveling southbound on Highway 18 and, according to police, failed to stop for a stop light at the intersection.

Police say both vehicles were a total loss.

Gabel was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device.

Anyone over the age of 70 should take a driving test before renewing their license.

People shouldn’t be allowed to drive when they are under 25. They have more tickets and accidents then anyone.

fair enough, and a similar mandatory ban on anyone over 70 since that category is overrepresented in the statistics too?

Hey Braindead. People over 70 only get a two year license and have to go into D.O.T. to get a new one.

true, but they are clearly are not held to the same standards as 16-year-olds. i watch my senile, 80+ neighbors back into garbage cans, car ports, run into curbs and even parked cars on a more or less regular basis as they drive around town. and knowing their personality there is NO way they’d be still driving had they gotten their licenses revoked.

What a crass statement. “Senile 80+ neighbors”? How do you know they are senile? I sincerely hope that when you are 80+, you have someone who will take care of you. Why do you think these people are still driving? Probably because their children don’t live in Mason City or don’t bother to come see them or ask them if they need something. What would you suggest they do – walk to the store?

Allowing an elderly relative to drive amounts to elder abuse.

What the heck was he doing in Charles City? Stay where you were born.

That’s racist you know

If you pay attention to things. Matt works for a bank in Chucktown not KIMT anymore

Not on Clark street he doesn’t. Probably off to see his girl friend.

He wasn’t born in Mason City.

aaaah, another immigrant.
