MCPD

MASON CITY – Authorities and police today plan to return to the scene along a river in Mason City where human remains were found to continue their investigation.

On March 11, 2021, human remains were found on the north shore of the Winnebago River near Illinois Avenue. This morning, law enforcement personnel will be returning to the area to search for additional remains. The Mason City Police Department is being assisted in this investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the State Medical Examiner’s Office, the Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and City of Mason City Operations and Maintenance.

This discovery remains under investigation. We are working with the DCI and the State Medical Examiner’s Office on identification. That process will take several weeks.

Birch Drive will be closed from Illinois to Highway 122 today during the time that teams are working in the area. We appreciate the community’s help in keeping the area free of traffic congestion and obstruction while personnel are working in the area.
