Iowa Senate Democrats fight to keep background checks for gun purchases

Wahls

DES MOINES – On a party-line vote tonight, the Republican members of the Iowa Senate voted for legislation that will eliminate existing requirements for background checks for Iowa gun sales.

The legislation, HF 756, does away with Iowa’s law requiring a background check in order to purchase a handgun.

If Governor Reynolds signs HF 756, Iowans will be able to purchase a firearm from a private seller without a background check and then carry it anywhere in public without any firearms training proficiency.

Senate Democratic Leader Zach Wahls offered an amendment to require background checks.  It was defeated by Senate Republicans.

Video of his floor comments are available on Youtube at: https://youtu.be/8nBIPFUDc6A .

Transcript of Senator Wahl’s remarks on Senate Amendment 3092 to House File 756:

I am offering this amendment today because Iowans support background checks.

Iowans know that we are safer in our homes and communities because of background checks.

My amendment would require background checks on all gun sales.

There’s data to show that Iowa’s current system of background checks is working: 14,921 illegal sales have been blocked by the system in Iowa from 1998 to 2019.

Let me repeat that: Because of Iowa’s current system requiring background checks, 14,921 illegal sales have been blocked between 1998 and 2019.

If the system in Iowa isn’t broken, what are we doing here?

We know from other states that what legislative Republicans are proposing today does NOT work.

In Missouri, Republicans repealed their law in 2007.  When Missouri repealed its purchase permit law requiring background checks, the state experienced an up to 27 percent increase in its firearm homicide rate and a 16 percent increase in its firearm suicide rate.

Senate Amendment 3092 attempts to fix some of the biggest problems with this bill.

If signed into law, there would be NO background checks whatsoever required for private sales.

If signed into law, there would be NO requirement for a permit to carry a weapon in public.

If signed into law, people without any type of firearms training will be allowed to carry in public.  So, a person can purchase a firearm from a private seller without a background check and then carry it anywhere in public without any firearms training or proficiency if this bill is adopted.

If you support background checks, vote “yes.” If you oppose background checks, vote “no.”

“Iowans will be able to purchase a firearm from a private seller without a background check”

Iowans already can buy, borrow and be gifted firearms from other private Iowans, no federal government involvement necessary. This is what the left likes to call the death-Nazi massmurderer making gunshow loophole. Also known as the law that allows a father to gift his guns to his sons without having to drive an hour to an arms dealer in order the no commit a Felony.

A CBS news interview was centered around the Biden family and Hunter Biden’s drug use and how it all relates to his new book, “Beautiful Things.” The book confirms that Hunter Biden was consuming drugs around the same time that he acquired a firearm. This is extremely illegal.

Joe Biden is coming for our gun rights with everything he has! We can stop him here in Iowa with the Second Amendment Preservation Act! But that can’t happen if the politicians in Des Moines don’t pass the bill!

We have President Depends creating a job creation climate that’s so bad—companies don’t even want to risk it here. This is the exact opposite of what happened under Trump.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Trump is absolutely the worst President this country has ever seen. He lied, stole, and cheated his country to feed his ego. You are a fool for voting for him.

Biden aims to ram through what could amount to a $5 trillion-plus overhaul of America, with “vast changes to voting, immigration and inequality.” These changes reportedly include landmark legislation on climate change, guns, and voting.

The old flip flop by socialists – 1st it said firearms -then it said handguns – where did it say concealed carry?S0 then if you sell your 22 single shot rifle to your neighbor you have to run a background check on him? This is just demrocrap bs on how to weaken your second amendment rights -has nothing to do with concealed carry permits which should have background checks. With millions of invaders from all countries it will almost make it sensible to carry for your own safety -anyway that’s the way 2 to 4 million new giu owners every month are thinking.

The “background checks for all purchases” isn’t about checking the person out. It IS about making sure that the gun is registered, so they know WHERE it is WHEN they, like they NAZIs , decide to take them away.(First, it was from their political opponents, then the Jews, then most others.)

If we falter and lose our freedoms. it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

“(iv) demonstrates that the individual has provided for storage of the firearm in a safe or facility approved by the Attorney General for the storage of firearms.

NOW FOR THE FUN ONE.

“(2) PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION.—A psychological evaluation is conducted in accordance with this paragraph if—

“(A) the evaluation is conducted in compliance with such standards as shall be established by the Attorney General;

“(B) the evaluation is conducted by a licensed psychologist approved by the Attorney General;

“(C) as deemed necessary by the licensed psychologist involved, the evaluation included a psychological evaluation of other members of the household in which the individual resides; and(So not only the person jumping the hoops to beg to be able to exercise their 2nd amendment rights, but other members of the household also)

THIS IS THE BIG ONE.

“(D) as part of the psychological evaluation, the licensed psychologist interviewed any spouse of the individual, any former spouse(Well, you’re not getting a license) of the individual, and at least 2 other persons who are a member of the family of, or an associate of, the individual to further determine the state of the mental, emotional, and relational stability of the individual in relation to firearms.

(To get the license you have to have the government firearm insurance.)

“(d) Firearm insurance.—

“(1) IN GENERAL.—The Attorney General shall issue to any person who has applied for a license pursuant to subsection (c) and has paid to the Attorney General the fee specified in paragraph (2) of this subsection a policy that insures the person against liability for losses and damages resulting from the use of any firearm by the person during the 1-year period that begins with the date the policy is issued.

“(2) FEE.—The fee specified in this paragraph is $800.”.

There is more, but, I figured this was enough. If you are interested look up

Don’t need to shoot to get a permit? That is kind of stupid. Sort of like letting a doctor cut you open with no practice. Or a mechanic fix your car with no experience. Or giving you a driver’s license without proving you can drive.

it is my understanding that the current conceal carry permit can be had with a few hours of classroom training with no concern if i or any one else in the class has to demostrate any kind of proficiency?

My son did his “classroom training” in about half hour online and then printed up a certificate, it’s that damn easy to get the permit.
